My goal for shortly after we moved into our house last May was to get everything perfect as quickly as I could and then share each room here on the blog. I was not going to be one of those people who still had boxes sitting around in rooms 6 months after moving in. Surprise, surprise, that didn’t happen! Turns out moving takes it out of you. And then life got super busy right after moving. We also had projects we wanted to complete before we could call a room “done” so we put off the whole room (we still have some projects to finish).
The girls’ playroom and Audrey’s flamingo bedroom are actually the only rooms that are just how I want them, with the exception of the girls’ Parisian bathroom, which is decorated pretty much the same as it was in our old house. Maybe I will update that post with pictures of their new bathroom.
Mint and Pink Girls’ Playroom
The girls’ mint and pink playroom may be my favorite in the house. The entire upstairs in our home is a big open room with a small bathroom, and when we were looking at houses we thought it would be the perfect space for a playroom. It’s a great space for them to have a ton of fun playing in now, but we can also see it growing with them as they get older. I can see them having friends over for sleepovers, watching movies, and talking about boys.
Another thing I was looking for in a house was a playroom that could accommodate bunk beds. I liked the idea of having extra beds for when people came to visit, and for the girls to do sleepovers (“sister sleepovers” and sleepovers with friends). When I was younger and my cousins and their family would come visit, the adults would sleep in our beds and all the cousins would sleep on the floor, or share a bed, which was so much fun as a kid. This space is perfect for the cousins to have their own space and the adults to have some quiet downstairs to visit.
Why did we choose mint and pink? It’s a beautiful color scheme, but that’s not the only reason we chose it. My sister had gifted the girls a teepee for Christmas last year and it has a navy chevron print on it. I wanted colors that would coordinate with navy, so I chose mint and pink. It ended up being a very easy color scheme to pull off and I absolutely LOVE how it turned out. It’s so perfect for their personalities.
The room is a little bit of an odd shape, so we had to be strategic with how we arranged everything. We decided to use the main wall as toy storage and a spot for the TV. This is close to our set up in our old playroom. I took two Target 2×4 cube organizers and turned them on their sides to create a long space for storage that doubles as a stand for the TV. I needed a spot for our consoles, so I ended up taking one of the dividing walls out and opening it up so everything would fit nicely.
We took the dress up station and placed it at the end to give the wall a little more height and dimension. This dress up station is simply a 3×3 cube organizer that we removed walls from. We left one row of walls for storage and use the space on the side to hang dresses by using a tension shower curtain rod. Super easy to do!
On the wall I decided to get 8×8 square frames and print black and white pictures of the girls together each year since Audrey was born. I want this to be a space full of sisterly love, a place where they can come and be best friends, make memories, and grow together. Of course more often than not they end up arguing over something, but I want them to look at this wall, see “I love you, Sister” and remember how lucky they are to have each other. ( Wood cutouts are from craftcuts.com)
In the alcove where the dormer is, we decided to put my old desk that my dad made me back in college. We store coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, and that kind of thing in there. My vision originally was to have two desks on each side of the dormer. I picture it as a space where they can sit and do their homework when they’re a little older. But obviously, we don’t need a space like that quite yet, so one desk will do for now. This way it leaves more room for storing the bigger toys. We may change it up down the road as their interests and needs change.
I think this little teepee is just adorable. I would have loved something like this as a kid to crawl into and read. Since I took these photos a while back, they have since broken one of the legs, so I have to get that fixed….
I wanted to make this wall a combination of their interests. Audrey of course loves “flinginos” and Raley is very into mermaids and unicorns. I couldn’t find any framed mermaid art that looked like her, so I grabbed this cute unicorn I found at Old Time Pottery.
The bunk bed that we found on Wayfair fit absolutely perfectly in this little alcove in their playroom. We wanted one with stairs on the side because we thought it would be safer than a ladder and we decided to go with twin over full so more kids can comfortably sleep on it (adults too). We also got bunk beds with a trundle underneath, so that’s one more spot for someone to sleep! We still haven’t used the trundle, but the girls are excited to. They asked me one time if one of their friends could come over and sleep in the “drawer” ? ?
I went back and forth on if I wanted to do the same bedding on top and bottom or do pink on one and mint on the other. They had the same comforter in both options (I actually got the pink one for Audrey’s bed). I decided to stick with the same mint color on top and bottom and I definitely like it better than if I had done different colors. and the are from Target. We actually ordered pop out mattresses from Wayfair for our bunk beds. We’ve never tried these before. We read reviews on Amazon about some having mold and smelling really bad, but I found zero reviews on Wayfair that mentioned that, so we ordered from there. I would not recommend these to sleep on every night (at least not for adults – they may be fine for children), but they work great in these beds!
Once the bunk beds were in I thought the wall needed a little something extra, so I ordered polka dot wall decals to put on the wall behind the bunk bed, and I think it turned out cute!
We went back and forth on whether or not we wanted to put our futon up there, but decided against it because we wanted them to have more play space. Instead, we decided to get a pink rug for the middle of the room to go under their table and chairs.
I think that about covers it! I love going up into this room and watching them play. I hope that they realize just how cool it is, because I would have loved to have a room like this as a kid! I will link a few of the items in this room below, if you’re interested. Most of the wall decor, picture frames, and the rainbow pillow seen on the bed came from Hobby Lobby, so it won’t be linked, but be sure to look around there if you see something you like.
Last year when we used the KonMari method to declutter and organize our home, we had our playroom very well organized. I need to go through their toys and do another purge since they got so many new things for their birthdays and Christmas. I plan to share how I do this and how we organize our toys once I get it done, so stay tuned! Have a great week!
