Since my last post about our girls’ playroom, I have had lots of comments and questions about our dress up storage solution. I saw something similar to this on Pinterest several years ago, and it’s worked great for us since.
We simply took a that we already had in Raley’s nursery, removed some walls and shelves, and added a tension shower curtain rod. Today I will show you how we did this.
How to Create a Simple Dress Up Storage Solution
Since we created this dress up storage solution several years ago, I obviously can’t share any “in process” photos, but I’ll do my best to explain it in a way that makes sense!
This cube organizer is made up of two long pieces, and 6 smaller pieces. Make sure it is positioned in a way that the long pieces are vertical (walls) and the short pieces are horizontal (shelves).
You’re going to remove the screws that are holding the long vertical wall in place and the screws that are holding the shelves in place (all found on the outside of the organizer.)
If I remember correctly, the shelves are held in place in the center by wooden dowels, so you will need to replace these dowels with screws so that the remaining shelves don’t sag.
Obviously if you are buying this new specifically to create storage for your dress up items, you will just set these pieces aside and only put together the one wall with shelves.
I got a to hang the dresses on.
We use to hold other dress up items such as shoes, skirts, gowns that we don’t want to hang up, etc. We also have a tall mirror and a little chest that sits to the side which holds their headbands, play jewelry, sunglasses, and other accessories. You could certainly store these things in your cubes if you wanted.
It’s as easy as that! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, I’d be happy to help!

This is awesome! Just what I was looking for. I have twins, so made 2, one from an old unit that I disassembled and one freshly built. Both were super easy. Great idea, thanks so much!
So glad you found it helpful! I hope your girls enjoy it!

What size tension rod did you use?
Hi. I love this idea. I am writing a round-up post about different dress-up storage ideas. I would love to include this on my site. Can I have permission to use a photo and you will get a do-follow link back? Thanks so much!
Hello! Where is the I love you sister wall quote from?
You’ve written terrific content on this topic, which goes to show how knowledgable you are on this subject. I happen to cover about Cosmetics on my personal blog 59N and would appreciate some feedback. Thank you and keep posting good stuff!
