We are SO ANXIOUS to find out the gender of this baby! We have an appointment for a 4D ultrasound scheduled less than three weeks from now (!) at 15 weeks. We would be able to do it earlier (at 14 weeks) but because of all that’s going on with COVID-19, her office is shut down until April 17th. There is a chance that her office will be shut down for an extended time and we will have to wait an extra week to get it done at the doctor’s office. I know, one week isn’t that long, but I WANT TO KNOW SO BAD!!!
In the meantime we’ve been analyzing all the old wives tales. I’m aware that these are not accurate, but they’re still fun to look at, and then see if they were right.
So what are the old wives tales predicting we’ll have? Let’s see, and then comment below with your guess!
Old Wives Tales to Predict Gender
Chinese calendar
Many people look to the Chinese gender chart to predict what they’re having. Some swear by it! It looks at your age and month of conception, and comes up with a prediction according to a Lunar calendar.
Past pregnancies: It was correct for Raley, but wrong for Audrey, so we’re 50/50 on the Chinese gender calendar.
Prediction: BOY
Mayan calendar
According to the Mayan gender predictor, if the age of the mother at conception and the number of the month of conception are both odd/even, then it’s a girl. If one is odd and one is even, then it’s a boy.
Past pregnancies: Again, it was correct for Raley and wrong for Audrey.
Prediction: BOY
Cravings
It’s long been said that if you’re craving sweet foods, then baby is a girl; if you’re craving salty/sour foods then baby is a boy.
I haven’t had super strong cravings this time, but I’d say more salty than sweet. When I snack I tend to grab chips or crackers. There were a couple of weeks that all I wanted was a greasy burger, but that has seemed to subside. I tend to find myself wanting sandwiches a lot. I’ve also wanted sour, but I try to limit myself because the acid in the sour candy tears my mouth up!
Past pregancies: With Raley I craved all kinds of sweets (and showed it by gaining over 60 pounds! ?) With Audrey I craved everything sour. The more mouth puckering the better.
Prediction: BOY
Headaches
According to old wives tales, if you have frequent headaches, it’s a boy; if you don’t have headaches, it’s a girl.
I’ve unfortunately had quite a few migraine type headaches (ugh!). I would get migraines before pregnancy, but I could always take my prescription migraine medicine, it was gone in a couple hours, and I could go about my day. Now all I can take is Tylenol, which doesn’t seem to touch it. They seem to come in clusters. I’ll have 2-3 days where I’ll have a headache every day, and then go a week or two without any, so I’m thankful that they’re not constant.
Past pregnancies: I never had bad headaches with either previous pregnancies. If I would get a headache, Tylenol would take care of it quickly, so it was never a big issue.
Prediction: BOY
Morning sickness
Legend has it that if you have severe morning sickness that it’s a girl, and if you don’t have much nausea then it’s a boy.
I have been very thankful to not have any morning sickness. Every now and then some smells will trigger nausea, but I have not gotten sick at all.
Past pregnancies: I never had much morning sickness with my girls either, so this one was definitely wrong for them!
Prediction: BOY
Baby’s heart rate
They say that if the baby’s heart rate is over 140, it’s a girl. If it’s below 140, it’s a boy.
At our first appointment, baby’s heart rate was 160.
Past pregnancies: The girls’ heart rates were always above 140 throughout my pregnancies.
Prediction: GIRL
Urine color
Kinda gross, but it’s said that if your urine is bright yellow, it’s a boy. If it’s a dull color, it’s a girl.
My pee is almost always bright yellow. It freaks me out because I know I’m drinking enough water!
Past pregnancies: I honestly can’t remember!
Prediction: BOY
Mood
They say that if you’re super mellow and laid back, that it’s a boy. If you’re moody and irritable, it’s a girl.
Really, it depends on the day, but I have found myself getting more worked up over little things since finding out I was pregnant.
Past pregnancies: I can’t remember specifically, but I feel like I was pretty chill during those. David may remember differently though.
Prediction: GIRL
Skin condition
It’s said if your skin is pretty clear, and you have that pregnancy “glow” that it’s a boy. If your skin is breaking out or super oily, it’s a girl.
I’ve actually had pretty clear skin this time. This could possibly be due to the fact that we’re stuck at home and I have worn make-up maybe twice in the past three weeks.
Past pregnancies: Don’t remember
Prediction: BOY
Hot or cold
They say that if you feel cold and icy, it’s a boy, and if you’re hot and sweaty, it’s a girl.
If you know me, you know I’m a hot body. I am always hot and thrive in the cold. I don’t want to be touched or feel body heat against me when it’s time to go to sleep. Well this pregnancy, I get cold really easily. Sometimes I’ll even stick my feet and legs over on David’s side before falling asleep to warm up, which he knows is unlike me.
Past pregnancies: hot and sweaty the entire time
Prediction: BOY
The ring test
Tie your wedding ring on a string, have someone hold it above your belly and see which way it moves. If it moves back and forth in a straight line, it’s a boy. If it moves in a circle, it’s a girl.
Prediction: BOY
Sleeping side
They say that if you most often sleep on your right side, it’s a girl. If you sleep on your left, it’s a boy
I tend to sleep on both sides. I’m only comfortable laying on one side for a certain amount of time then I flip the other way, at least until I actually fall asleep.
Past pregnancies: I don’t remember
Prediction: TOSS UP
Most of these are predicting boy, which means it will probably be a girl (ha!) What is your prediction? Drop a comment below and let me know what you think!
Lindsay says
Totally think it is going to be a girl. I feel like after two little girls in a row you’re just meant to finish the family with another little girl! <3
Rebecca says
Just based on the heartbeat alone I’d say a girl. The heartbeat was always accurate in my 4 pregnancies and according to all of my nurse friends they say it’s a pretty good indicator. Based on what you say about the Mayan calendar theory it was accurate in 3 of my 4 so not to bad odds.
Jane Houghton says
One old wives tale they used to say when I was pregnant was if you carried the baby all out front it was a boy If your belly was more rounded toward the sides it was a girl. Don’t know how true this was don’t remember how I carried mine really. I know I dreamed what I was going to have with both Bob and Vickie and it was right. With Steve I don’t remember having any dreams. With Bob and Vickie I had morning sickness for three months. Couldn’t even smell coffee and I craved a good cup of coffee. With Steve had no sickness at all his was my easiest pregnancy. With Bob and Vickie I also had gestational diabetes and thrombophlebitis after delivery with Steve nothing. I predict a boy. Love ya Granny
Heather Tenneson says
I’ve heard that about the belly, although it’s too soon to tell for me. With raley I was more round all over and with Audrey more out front. I carried both high though. I have an aversion to hot coffee right now, but I can drink iced. It was the same for both before, but that went away after the first trimester thankfully. The smell doesn’t trigger it but the thought of drinking it makes my stomach turn.
We will know soon enough what it is! Love you!
